And we’ll deliver it in the coming weeks!

To the Hon. Prime Minister and Members of the New Government,

Congratulations on your recent election. With a new term comes an opportunity - and a responsibility - to create lasting, meaningful change for the people of Australia. As leaders of this country, we call on you to take immediate action to address two urgent crises: food insecurity and food waste.

Right now, 1 in 6 adults and 1.2 million children across Australia are living with food-insecurity. Every day, more families are being forced to make impossible choices between paying rent, bills, or putting food on the table. At the same time, a staggering 7.6 million tonnes of food is going to waste every year – food that could and should be nourishing our communities.

This is not just a moral issue – it is a national crisis.

At OzHarvest, we rescue and deliver over half a million meals every week, but it’s not enough. The demand is growing exponentially, and we cannot solve it alone. The solutions are within reach – but we need the government to act, and act now.

We are calling on you to:

1. Appoint a dedicated Minister for Food to ensure food security and food systems are governed with the urgency and coordination they require.

2. Commit to sustainable and increasing funding for food rescue organisations, to meet the skyrocketing need for daily food relief and reduce food waste at scale.

3. Introduce a Food Donation Tax Incentive, which would unlock 100 million additional meals per year by making it financially viable for farmers and businesses to donate surplus food instead of dumping it.

4. Most importantly, tackle the root causes of food insecurity by:

  • Increasing income support payments to meet the real cost of living.
  • Investing in affordable housing solutions and policy to protect renters.
  • Supporting communities with policies that relieve financial stress and lift families out of poverty.

These are not radical asks – they are evidence-based, widely supported, and urgently needed.

We stand with all those who have already added their voices to this call. Our petitions, our campaigns, and our community make it clear: the people of Australia want action. We want a food system that feeds us all fairly and sustainably. We want a country where no child goes to bed hungry, and no good food ends up in landfill.

This is a chance for your government to lead with compassion, vision, and courage.

Don’t let it go to waste.

Signed,
OzHarvest & Community Supporters
